Trauma-Informed Care in Developmental Services

This course prepares healthcare professionals to appropriately support individuals with developmental disabilities to navigate their experiences of trauma and cope with trauma-related problems.

By the end of this course, you will be able to apply the skills to foster an environment that applies the principles of safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.

  • Collaborate with individuals to identify ways to make their environment safe
  • Use active listening and emotional validation to build trust between the individual and their worker
  • Apply strategies to increase choice and control for a person with a developmental disability
  • Guide people with developmental disabilities to identify their strengths to cope with trauma-related challenges
